The Phlebotomist’s primary role is to collect blood for accurate and reliable test results as quickly as possible. Medical diagnosis depends heavily on safe and accurate blood test. The Phlebotomist is trained to perform such test in a manor that is safe for both him/her and the patient. The Phlebotomist will be hired to perform his/her skills in laboratories, clinics, doctor’s offices, hospitals, and mobile labs. You will work in close proximity with other health care providers.
COVID 19 guidelines: We are following the guidelines set by the CDC.
Allied Professional Institute, an approved private postsecondary school with the state of California and approved through the Department of Public Health, Laboratory Field Services, offers a 20, 40, and 80 hour course in phlebotomy. 40 hours didactic and 40 hours practical. This course is for persons with less than 1040 hours of on the job experience. The student must perform 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures on patients of all ages and weight categories. The 40 hour didactic course is for Medical Assistants with less than 5 years of phlebotomy experience or more than 1040 hours of on-the-job experience. The individual will receive lectures in preparation for the up coming licensing exam required by the State of California.
The 20 hour Advance course is for persons with 1040 hours or more of on-the-job experience, 6 months of paid phlebotomy experience, or volunteer phlebotomy experience and have performed a minimum of 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures on patients of all ages and weight categories over the past 5 years or have been working as a phlebotomist.
The student will receive a certificate of completion upon successfully passing the course and will be eligible to take national exam. Once the student passes the National exam, which we give once a month, they can apply to the State of California for their Certified Phlebotomy Technician 1 certification.
Students taking the Phlebotomy Technician I course with no experience must be able to do one week for their externship. We provide the externship. If you have your own externship site, it must be approved through the health department. You are required to wear scrubs (any color) and tennis shoes (any color) in the clinic.
Medical assistants are required to take the Basic or Advanced Course depending on how many years of experience you have had. For those who have worked in a doctor’s office and drew blood in the past 5 years must have a copy of the “California Statement of Phlebotomy Experience” signed by the doctor and mail with the registration form or make an appointment to bring it into the office.
Foreign transcripts must be evaluated by “Current Members” of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES), and “Endorsed Members” of the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (AICE). Website: www.naces.org
